Isolation and loneliness. Freedom and infinity. Pal Frenak's new creation is about the walls, the physical and emotional boundaries within ourselves and about the way our imagination creates a completely new reality to survive. The image of flying is a deep and complex metaphor for Pal Frenak, inspired by Alan Parker's film, William Warthon's novel and Raymond Depardon's documentary film, entitled San Clemente. The piece Birdie is a dynamic vision about the fragile balance between sanity and insanity, the special relation between identity and imagination. The central question is: in the age of chaos, in the world of wars and cruelty, how can we create a small island of peace and what happens if the world outside doesn't accept our chosen way of living our lives?

Birdie has a unique set design - huge, light metal pyramids, that functions like a moveable, extraordinary labyrinth on stage. The set design is created and constructed by the architects of the Hungarian award-winning design laboratory, Planbureau, inspired by their unique design innovation, Logifaces, which is a new form of 3D puzzle, defined as the Rubik-cube of 21st century. These objects were adapted on the dance stage and transformed into transformable 2,5m high scenery elements especially for the new creation of Pal Frenak. The five dancers - members of Compagnie Pal Frenak, former dancers of Modern Ballet of Cuba and Royal Ballet of Sweden - participating in the new piece are moving in the extraordinary, recognizable style of Pal Frenak, using their classical ballet, and acrobatic knowledge combined with organic moves and contemporary techniques.

The acoustic atmosphere is created by the young and talented Berlin-based composer Norman Levy, his unique electroacoustic music is combined with classical music - Bach's cello suites - performed live during the performance, by cellist Endre Kertész. "Birdie is an astonishing, moving and extremely beautiful portrait of emotions and human feelings, with crystal clear structure and outstanding quality of dance. It is a masterpiece" (László Szabó G. theatre and dance critic) The performance is going to be premiered in MÜPA - Palace of Arts, as the highlight of the Budapest Spring Festival with the support of National Dance Theatre, Scène Nationale Evreux Louviers and National Cultural Fund of Hungary.

  • ISCHO RASS                     BERLIN/DRESDEN

Ischo Rass by Norman Levy & Christian Novopavlovski   The idea of the “Ischo Rass” project is the outcome of a first collaboration of Norman and Christian, during a music festival “Terasses Music’Art”. Originally the project consisted of a combination of contemporary dance act and live electronic music. The live act was based on a purely physical transcription of the music at times on the borders of improvisation. Having received extremely positive feedbacks, we decided to follow this concept, bringing it to a next stage by redefining its purposes and clarifying its working approach. This is how a collaborative process involving contemporary dance, music, video art, light show and costumes from various influences started.

Ischo rass, “and again” in Russian, is a metaphor of the schizophrenic duality which occurs when trying to overcome creative potentials limitations. It questions the influences of education on creativity and how in some cases it is absolutely necessary to overcome classical edifications and institutions in order to reach this unlimited essence of creation.

The choreography involves a dancer in a constant inner confrontation between his strict classical dancing education and his lust to escape from its narrow structures. This detachment is what will allow him to access a real freedom of moves and thoughts and will be incarnated in the play by the sudden use of electronic dance music. The audio act played live will allow the listeners to go on a journey between distended classical music, experimental ethnic ambient and finally the use of cutting edge basement techno.  The lights will evolve from a traditional stage lightning to a more modern clubbing lightning. This will play a key role as it will also emphasize the confrontation between classical and electronic forms. All along the show there will be a symbiosis between all three disciplines giving the audience the opportunity to progress on tangible edges whether through watching, hearing, analysing, standing or even dancing.

A few words on the authors: Norman Levy has been studying sound engineering at SAE in Brüssel. He is a music producer and he is now working for the well known Pal Frenak Hungarian contemporary dance company, designing the soundtrack for their next show Birdie. Christian Novopavlovski was trained at the Palucca University of Dance in Dresden before integrating the Ballet de Marseilles. He recently held the main part for the representation on the swan lake at the Palermo Opera.
